Time Expressions – Japanese Cheat Sheet

Time in Japanese follows a logical pattern once you see the pieces. This sheet covers telling the clock, days, months, and the relative words (yesterday, next week, etc.) you'll use constantly.

Telling the time

Hours 〜時（じ）

１時	いちじ	1 o'clock
２時	にじ	2 o'clock
３時	さんじ	3 o'clock
４時	よじ	4 o'clock ⚠️
７時	しちじ	7 o'clock ⚠️
９時	くじ	9 o'clock ⚠️

⚠️ = irregular reading. 4=よ, 7=しち, 9=く

Minutes 〜分（ふん/ぷん）

１分	いっぷん	1 min ⚠️
２分	にふん	2 min
３分	さんぷん	3 min ⚠️
５分	ごふん	5 min
１０分	じっぷん	10 min ⚠️
３０分	さんじっぷん	30 min / 半

ふん → ぷん after 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10

Amounts of time: Time + 間（かん）

Key rule: 〜時（じ）means o'clock. To say an amount of time, add 間（かん）or use the dedicated counter. Students constantly confuse these two.

３時さんじ → 3 o'clockvs３時間さんじかん → 3 hours

Time + 後（あと）→ "in [time]"

３日後みっかあと→ in 3 days

１時間後いちじかんご→ in 1 hour

３時間後さんじかんごに来きてください。

Please come in 3 hours.

Time + 前（まえ）→ "[time] ago / before"

３日前みっかまえ→ 3 days ago

１時間前いちじかんまえ→ 1 hour before

２週間前にしゅうかんまえに始はじめた。

I started 2 weeks ago.

Duration in sentences

毎日まいにち２時間じかん勉強べんきょうします。I study 2 hours every day.

日本にほんに３ヶ月さんかげつ住すんでいました。I lived in Japan for 3 months.

明日あしたの朝あさ、早はやく起おきます。I'll wake up early tomorrow morning.

Telling the time

いま午後ごご２時じ３０分ぷんです。It is 2:30 PM now.

午前ごぜん８時じに会議かいぎがあります。There's a meeting at 8 AM.

何時なんじに起おきますか？What time do you wake up?

電車でんしゃは三時さんじ半はんに来きます。The train comes at 3:30.

Days of the week

月曜日げつようびに学校がっこうがあります。There's school on Monday.

土曜日どようびと日曜日にちようびは休やすみです。Saturday and Sunday are days off.

今日きょうは何曜日なんようびですか？What day of the week is it today?

Months & dates

誕生日たんじょうびは３月さんがつ１５日にちです。My birthday is March 15th.

４月しがつに日本にほんに行いきます。I'm going to Japan in April.

今日きょうは何月何日なんがつなんにちですか？What is today's date?

Relative time words

昨日きのう、友達ともだちに会あいました。I met a friend yesterday.

来週らいしゅう試験しけんがあります。There's an exam next week.

去年きょねん日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうし始はじめた。I started studying Japanese last year.

今朝けさ、朝ご飯あさごはんを食たべなかった。I didn't eat breakfast this morning.

Order in a sentence: Time expressions usually come near the beginning of the sentence, right after the topic. E.g. 明日、学校に行きます "Tomorrow I'll go to school."
