At a glance
Adding こと after a plain-form verb turns the action into a noun, like "reading" or "the act of reading". It is used to talk about hobbies, likes, abilities and experiences.
Verb (plain form) + こと
私の趣味は本を読むことです。 My hobby is reading books.
How to form it
Put the plain form of the verb directly before こと. The ます form is not used here.
| Verb group | Present | Negative | Past |
|---|---|---|---|
| う-verb 読む | 読むこと | 読まないこと | 読んだこと |
| る-verb 食べる | 食べること | 食べないこと | 食べたこと |
| する | すること | しないこと | したこと |
| 来る | 来ること | 来ないこと | 来たこと |
The whole phrase works like a noun, so it can take particles such as は, が and を.
