Verb そうにない

Expresses unlikelihood or that something does not seem likely to happen.

At a glance

Verb stem + そうにない means "doesn't look like it will happen" or "shows no sign of happening". The speaker judges this from what they see or from the situation.

Verb (ます-stem) + そうにない

雨あめはなかなかやみそうにない。 The rain shows no sign of stopping.

How to form it

Remove ます from the ます-form and add そうにない:

Verb group Dictionary form + そうにない
う-verb 降ふる 降ふりそうにない
る-verb 食たべる 食たべそうにない

来る 来くる 来きそうにない

そうにない is already negative. It changes like this:

Form Casual Polite
