~にしても

Expresses 'even if', 'no matter', 'regardless of'.

At a glance

~にしても means "even if" or "even granting that". You accept the first part as true or likely, but you say the second part still holds. The second part is usually an opinion, a criticism or a request.

[plain form / noun] にしても、[opinion, judgment or request]

遅おくれるにしても、連絡れんらくぐらいしてください。 Even if you're going to be late, at least let us know.

How to form it

にしても attaches to the plain form. Nouns and な-adjectives drop だ in the present.

Attaches to Form Example
Verb plain form + にしても 行いくにしても / 行いかないにしても / 行いったにしても
い-adj plain form + にしても 高たかいにしても / 高たかかったにしても
な-adj stem + にしても (no だ) 大変たいへんにしても / 大変たいへんだったにしても
Noun noun + にしても (no だ) 冗談じょうだんにしても / 冗談じょうだんだったにしても

Register: used in both speech and writing. The sentence ending decides politeness, not にしても.
