At a glance
もし~たなら means "if (it is the case that) ~ happened / has happened". It can be used for real situations the speaker is not sure about, and, with endings like のに or ていただろう, for things that did not happen.
もし + [plain past (た-form)] + なら、[result]
もし知っていたなら、教えたのに。 If I had known, I would have told you.
How to form it
Put the plain past form before なら. もし at the start is optional but makes the "if" clearer.
| Word type | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| う-verb 行く | 行ったなら | 行かなかったなら |
| る-verb 食べる | 食べたなら | 食べなかったなら |
| する | したなら | しなかったなら |
| 来る | 来たなら | 来なかったなら |
| い-adj 高い | 高かったなら | 高くなかったなら |
| な-adj 静か | 静かだったなら | 静かじゃなかったなら |
| Noun 学生 | 学生だったなら | 学生じゃなかったなら |
Think of it as た (completed) + なら ("if"). なら itself is not a past form. Note: いい becomes よかったなら.
