At a glance
AことはAが、B means "it's true that A, but B". You admit that A is true, then add a point that limits it or points the other way.
A (plain form) + ことは + A + が / けど、B
この本は読むことは読んだが、よくわからなかった。 I did read this book, but I didn't really understand it.
How to form it
The same word is said twice. The first A is usually the dictionary form. The second A shows tense and politeness.
| Type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| う-verb | 行くことは行く / 行った が | 行くことは行ったが |
| る-verb | 食べることは食べる / 食べた が | 食べることは食べるが |
| する | 勉強することは勉強した が | 勉強することは勉強したが |
| 来る | 来ることは来た が | 来ることは来たが |
| い-adjective | 高いことは高い が | 高いことは高いが |
| な-adjective | 便利なことは便利だ が | 便利なことは便利だが |
For polite speech, make only the second A polite: 行くことは行きますが.
