At a glance
~ずに means "without doing [something]". You do the main action without doing another one, or instead of doing it. It is a little more formal than ~ないで.
Verb ない-form (drop ない) + ずに + main clause
する → せずに
朝ご飯を食べずに家を出ました。 I left home without eating breakfast.
How to form it
Take the ない-form, drop ない, and add ずに. する is the exception.
| Verb group | Dictionary form | ない-form | ~ずに form |
|---|---|---|---|
| う-verb | 行く | 行かない | 行かずに |
| う-verb | 書く | 書かない | 書かずに |
| る-verb | 食べる | 食べない | 食べずに |
| る-verb | 見る | 見ない | 見ずに |
| する | する | しない | せずに |
| 来る | 来る | 来ない | 来ずに |
ずに itself does not change for tense or politeness. The final verb shows it: 見ずに寝た, 見ずに寝ました.
