~ずに

Express 'without doing' something or 'not doing' something.

At a glance

~ずに means "without doing [something]". You do the main action without doing another one, or instead of doing it. It is a little more formal than ~ないで.

Verb ない-form (drop ない) + ずに + main clause
する → せずに

朝あさご飯はんを食たべずに家いえを出でました。 I left home without eating breakfast.

How to form it

Take the ない-form, drop ない, and add ずに. する is the exception.

Verb group Dictionary form ない-form ~ずに form
う-verb 行いく 行いかない 行いかずに
う-verb 書かく 書かかない 書かかずに
る-verb 食たべる 食たべない 食たべずに
る-verb 見みる 見みない 見みずに

ずに itself does not change for tense or politeness. The final verb shows it: 見みずに寝ねた, 見みずに寝ねました.
