Verbs with する (Suru Verbs)

する動詞 · Lesson 4

Many Japanese verbs are "noun + する." Learn how to spot them and conjugate them: only する changes.

A large number of Japanese verbs are made of a noun + する (to do). For example: 勉強べんきょうする (to study), 料理りょうりする (to cook), 掃除そうじする (to clean). Once you learn how する conjugates, you can use every one of these verbs correctly.

How to spot する verbs

The dictionary form ends in する. The part before する is usually a noun (often a 漢語, Sino-Japanese word). That noun never changes when you conjugate. Only する changes.

The rule

  • する alone means "to do." It uses the stem し before every ending (しない, します, した, して, できる, etc.). For the full conjugation table of する and 来くる, see the lesson on Irregular verbs: する・来る.
  • Noun + する: keep the noun, conjugate する the same way. 勉強べんきょうする → 勉強べんきょうしない, 勉強べんきょうします, 勉強べんきょうした, 勉強べんきょうして.
  • Potential: する becomes できる. So 勉強べんきょうする → 勉強べんきょうできる (can study), 料理りょうりする → 料理りょうりできる (can cook).
