Polite Form (ます)

The standard polite form you use in daily conversation. Essential for N5.

The polite form is used in daily conversation with people you don't know well, at work, or in formal situations. It ends in ます (present). Past polite is ました (covered in the Past lesson).

Rules

  • Godan: Change the last syllable to the い-row and add ます. 書かく → かきます, 飲のむ → のみます.
  • Ichidan: Drop る and add ます. 食たべる → 食たべます, 見みる → 見みます.
  • する: します. 勉強べんきょうする → 勉強べんきょうします.
  • 来る:来きます (きます).

Example sentences

毎日日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうします。

I study Japanese every day.

あした友ともだちに会あいます。

I will meet my friend tomorrow.

晩ばんご飯はんを食たべます。

I eat dinner. / I will eat dinner.

来らい週しゅう日本にほんに来きます。

I will come to Japan next week.
