Combined forms: polite past (ました), polite negative (ません), past negative (なかった), and their combinations.
Complex forms combine polite/negative/past in one conjugation. They appear in the conjugation game as: Polite Past (ました), Polite Negative (ません), Polite Negative Past (ませんでした), Negative Past (なかった).
Overview
- Polite past: ました — same stem as ます + ました (e.g. 書きました).
- Polite negative: ません — same stem + ません (e.g. 書きません).
- Polite negative past: ませんでした (e.g. 書きませんでした).
- Negative past (plain): なかった — ない changes to なかった (e.g. 書かなかった, 食べなかった).

Negative past (plain なかった)
ない → なかった. Godan: あ-row + なかった (書かない → 書かなかった). Ichidan: 食べない → 食べなかった.

Example sentences
きのう仕事を休みました。
I took the day off work yesterday. (polite past)
肉は食べません。
I don't eat meat. (polite negative)
会議には出ませんでした。
I didn't attend the meeting. (polite negative past)
昨日は何も食べなかった。
I didn't eat anything yesterday. (plain negative past)
