~と言わんばかりに

Indicates an action or behavior that strongly implies a certain unspoken message or feeling.

At a glance

~と言いわんばかりに means "as if to say ~". It describes behavior that clearly shows a message the person does not actually say. It is mostly used in writing and storytelling.

[Unspoken message] と言わんばかりに + [action]

彼かれは早はやく帰かえれと言いわんばかりに時計とけいを見みた。 He looked at the clock as if to say "Go home already."

How to form it

The unspoken message comes first, usually in plain form (a command, a wish, a statement), followed by と. The ending changes with what comes next:

Attaches to Form Example
Verb (describes an action) ~と言いわんばかりに 帰かえれと言いわんばかりに時計とけいを見みた
Noun (describes a look, attitude) ~と言いわんばかりの 帰かえれと言いわんばかりの顔かお
End of sentence ~と言いわんばかりだ その態度たいどは帰かえれと言いわんばかりだった

What the parts mean: 言いわ + ん + ばかり. The ん comes from the classical auxiliary む (言いわむ → 言いわん), meaning "about to say / would say". It is not a negative. ばかり means "almost, to the point of". Together, the literal meaning is "almost saying".

Register: written and formal. In conversation it sounds dramatic or literary.
