Verb ては Verb

Expresses a repeated pattern of action; translates as 'every time', 'whenever', etc.

At a glance

Verb ては Verb describes two actions that repeat in a cycle: someone does A, then B, then A, then B again. It can also mean "whenever A happens, B happens."

Verb (て-form) + は + Verb

母ははは娘むすめの写真しゃしんを見みては泣ないている。 My mother keeps looking at her daughter's photo and crying.

How to form it

Make the て-form of the first verb and add は. After a て-form ending in で, it becomes では. The は is read "wa".

Group Dictionary form て-form + は Pattern example
う-verb 書かく 書かいては 書かいては消けす "write and erase"
う-verb 読よむ 読よんでは 読よんでは考かんがえる "read and think"
る-verb 食たべる 食たべては 食たべては寝ねる "eat and sleep"
する 喧嘩けんかする 喧嘩けんかしては 喧嘩けんかしては仲直なかなおりする "fight and make up"
来る 来くる 来きては 来きては帰かえる "come and go home"

The second verb is often in the ている form (書かいては消けしている). The pair can also be repeated with the stem: 書かいては消けし、書かいては消けし.
