At a glance
限り(は) means "as long as" or "while this condition is true". It sets a condition, and the main clause stays true only while that condition continues.
Verb (plain form) + 限り(は)、...
Noun / な-adjective + である + 限り(は)、...
この国にいる限り、この国の法律を守らなければならない。 As long as you are in this country, you must follow its laws.
How to form it
限り attaches to the plain form of a verb, and to nouns and な-adjectives with である. は can be added for emphasis.
| Attaches to | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb (dictionary form) | する限り | 続ける限り "as long as (I) continue" |
| Verb (ている form) | している限り | 生きている限り "as long as (I) am alive" |
| Verb (ない form) | しない限り | 謝らない限り "unless (he) apologizes" |
| な-adjective | である限り | 健康である限り "as long as (I) am healthy" |
| Noun | である限り | 学生である限り "as long as (you) are a student" |
The pattern is formal. である makes it sound written, but 〜ない限り is also common in speech.
