At a glance
~ことから means "from the fact that" or "since". It gives a fact as the basis for a judgment, a name, or a result, usually in formal or written Japanese.
[Plain form / な-adj + な / Noun + である] + ことから、[judgment / name / result]
窓が割れていることから、泥棒が入ったと分かった。 From the fact that the window was broken, we knew a burglar had gotten in.
How to form it
ことから attaches to the plain form. The register is formal and mostly written.
| Attaches to | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | Plain form (present, past, negative) | 来ることから / 来なかったことから |
| い-adjective | Plain form | 多いことから / 高くないことから |
| な-adjective | ~な or ~である | 静かなことから / 静かであることから |
| Noun | ~である | 学生であることから |
| な-adj / Noun, past | ~だった or ~であった | 静かだったことから / 学生だったことから |
With な-adjectives, both な and である are correct. である sounds more formal.
