Verb stem (ます-stem) + 切る
ケーキを全部食べ切りました。 I ate the whole cake.
How to form it
Take the ます-stem of the verb and add 切る:
| Verb group | Dictionary form | Stem | + 切る |
|---|---|---|---|
| う-verb | 読む | 読み | 読み切る |
| る-verb | 食べる | 食べ | 食べ切る |
| する-verb | 説明する | 説明し | 説明しきれない |
With する-verbs, the negative potential form (しきれない) is the most common. 来る is not normally used with 切る.
切る is a Godan (う-verb), even though it ends in -iru. It conjugates like this:
| Form | Polite | Casual |
|---|---|---|
| Present | 食べ切ります | 食べ切る |
| Negative | 食べ切りません | 食べ切らない |
| Past | 食べ切りました | 食べ切った |
| Can't (all) | 食べ切れません | 食べ切れない |
