Verb ないことには Verb ない

Express that something cannot be done without meeting a certain condition.

At a glance

Verb ないことには~ない means "unless you do A, B can't happen." Use it when you see A as a necessary first step, and without it the result is impossible or can't be known.

Verb (ない form) + ことには、[negative result]

やってみないことには、わかりません。 You won't know unless you try.

How to form it

Put the verb in its plain negative (ない form), then add ことには. The second half is a negative result.

Verb group Dictionary form ないことには form
う-verb 行いく 行いかないことには
る-verb 食たべる 食たべないことには
する する しないことには
来くる 来くる 来こないことには

In ことには, the には is the particle に plus the topic/contrast particle は. The whole phrase means roughly "as for (the case of) not doing ~." It is not the purpose には of 行いくには "in order to go."

Adjectives in the negative can also come before ことには, for example 安やすくないことには. Verbs are the most common.
