At a glance
Verb ないことには~ない means "unless you do A, B can't happen." Use it when you see A as a necessary first step, and without it the result is impossible or can't be known.
Verb (ない form) + ことには、[negative result]
やってみないことには、わかりません。 You won't know unless you try.
How to form it
Put the verb in its plain negative (ない form), then add ことには. The second half is a negative result.
| Verb group | Dictionary form | ないことには form |
|---|---|---|
| う-verb | 行く | 行かないことには |
| る-verb | 食べる | 食べないことには |
| する | する | しないことには |
| 来る | 来る | 来ないことには |
In ことには, the には is the particle に plus the topic/contrast particle は. The whole phrase means roughly "as for (the case of) not doing ~." It is not the purpose には of 行くには "in order to go."
Adjectives in the negative can also come before ことには, for example 安くないことには. Verbs are the most common.
