At a glance

~さ turns an adjective into a noun that expresses its degree or extent, like "-ness" in English or "height", "weight" and "heat". It is used for measurable size (高さ "height") and for qualities or feelings (優しさ "kindness").

い-adj: 高い → 高 + さ → 高さ
な-adj: 静か → 静か + さ → 静かさ

この部屋へやの広ひろさはどのくらいですか。 How big is this room?

How to form it

Adjective type Rule Example
い-adjective Drop い, add さ 高たかい → 高たかさ, 寒さむい → 寒さむさ
いい Use よ, add さ いい → よさ
Ending in ない Drop い, add さ 少すくない → 少すくなさ
