~わけにはいかない means "I can't (do it)" when doing it would be wrong because of duty, social rules or the situation. It is not about ability. With a ない-form verb it means "I have to (do it)".
Verb (dictionary form) + わけにはいかない = can't do
Verb (ない form) + わけにはいかない = must do
明日は大事な会議があるので、休むわけにはいきません。 I have an important meeting tomorrow, so I can't take the day off.
How to form it
The verb before わけ stays in plain form. Only いかない changes for politeness and tense.
| Attaches to | Casual | Polite | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictionary form: 行く | 行くわけにはいかない | 行くわけにはいきません | can't go |
| ない form: 行かない | 行かないわけにはいかない | 行かないわけにはいきません | must go |
| Past (dictionary form) | 行くわけにはいかなかった | 行くわけにはいきませんでした | couldn't go |
In very formal or business speech, いきません can become the humble まいりません: 休むわけにはまいりません.
