い-Adjective く + Verb

Used to connect an い-adjective to a verb, modifying the verb (adverbial usage).

At a glance

An い-adjective changes its final い to く to describe how an action is done, like "-ly" in English. The く form goes before the verb.

[い-adjective without い] + く + Verb
はやい → はやく + はしります

田中たなかさんは速はやく走はしります。 Mr. Tanaka runs fast.

How to form it

Drop the final い and add く. The adjective いい is irregular and becomes よく.

Adjective Adverb form Example Meaning
早はやい early 早はやく 早はやく起おきる get up early
大おおきい big 大おおきく 大おおきく書かく write big
楽たのしい fun 楽たのしく 楽たのしく遊あそぶ play happily
いい good (exception) よく よく寝ねる sleep well
きれい (な-adjective) きれいに きれいに書かく write neatly

The く form does not change. Only the verb conjugates: 早はやく起おきます, 早はやく起おきません, 早はやく起おきました.
