い-adjectives

One of the two main types of adjectives in Japanese that end in い in their dictionary form. They can directly modify nouns and function as predicates without additional words.

At a glance

い-adjectives describe people and things (big, cold, fun). They go directly before a noun, or end a sentence as the predicate.

[Noun] は [い-adjective] です。
[い-adjective] + [Noun]

この本ほんは高たかいです。 This book is expensive.

How to form it

Drop the final い and add the ending. For the polite form, add です.

Form Casual Polite
Present 高たかい 高たかいです
Negative 高たかくない 高たかくないです / 高たかくありません
Past 高たかかった 高たかかったです
Past negative 高たかくなかった 高たかくなかったです / 高たかくありませんでした
Before a noun 高たかい本ほん 高たかい本ほん

Exception: いい changes to よ in every form except the present: よくない, よかった, よくなかった.
