Verb ながら

Expresses 'while' or 'as' in the sense of doing two things simultaneously.

At a glance

Verb ながら means "while doing". It is used when the same person does two actions at the same time.

[Verb ます-stem] + ながら + [Main verb]

音楽おんがくを聞ききながら勉強べんきょうします。 I study while listening to music.

How to form it

Take the ます-form, remove ます, and add ながら:

Verb group Dictionary form ます-form ながら form
う-verb 飲のむ 飲のみます 飲のみながら
う-verb 歩あるく 歩あるきます 歩あるきながら
る-verb 食たべる 食たべます 食たべながら
る-verb 見みる 見みます 見みながら

ながら itself does not change. Tense, negative and politeness go on the main verb at the end: テレビを見みながら食たべました "I ate while watching TV."
