At a glance
Verb ているところ means "in the middle of doing" something. It stresses that an action is happening at that exact moment, often to explain what you are busy with.
Verb (て-form) + いるところ です / だ
今、昼ご飯を食べているところです。 I'm in the middle of eating lunch right now.
How to form it
Make the て-form of the verb, then add いるところ.
| Verb group | Dictionary form | ているところ |
|---|---|---|
| う-verb | 読む | 読んでいるところ |
| る-verb | 食べる | 食べているところ |
| する | 勉強する | 勉強しているところ |
| 来る | 来る | See the note below |
The ending changes for politeness and time:
| Form | Polite | Casual |
|---|---|---|
| Present | 読んでいるところです | 読んでいるところだ |
| Past | 読んでいるところでした | 読んでいるところだった |
Note on 来る: 来ている means "has come, is here", so 来ているところ does not mean "is coming now". To say someone is on the way, use a verb like 歩く: 駅まで歩いているところです "I'm walking to the station."
