At a glance
~かどうか means "whether (or not)". It turns a yes/no question into part of a larger sentence, often before verbs like 分かる, 知る, 聞く and 決める.
[Plain form] + かどうか + 分かりません / 知っていますか / 教えてください
明日雨が降るかどうか分かりません。 I don't know whether it will rain tomorrow.
How to form it
かどうか attaches to the plain form. Nouns and な-adjectives take かどうか directly, with no だ.
| Attaches to | Present | Past |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | 行くかどうか | 行ったかどうか |
| い-adjective | 高いかどうか | 高かったかどうか |
| な-adjective | 便利かどうか | 便利だったかどうか |
| Noun | 先生かどうか | 先生だったかどうか |
かどうか itself is neutral. The politeness of the sentence comes from the main verb at the end: 分かりません (polite), 分からない (casual).
