~でしょう

A conjecture or probability; 'probably', 'I think', 'it seems'.

At a glance

~でしょう means "probably" or "I think". It is used when you guess something is likely but are not sure. With rising intonation, it also asks "right?".

Verb / い-adjective (plain form) + でしょう
な-adjective / Noun + でしょう

明日あしたは雨あめが降ふるでしょう。 It will probably rain tomorrow.

How to form it

でしょう follows the plain form. For な-adjectives and nouns in the present, drop だ.

Word type Present Negative Past
う-verb 行いく 行いくでしょう 行いかないでしょう 行いったでしょう
る-verb 食たべる 食たべるでしょう 食たべないでしょう 食たべたでしょう
する するでしょう しないでしょう したでしょう

な-adj 便利べんり 便利べんりでしょう 便利べんりじゃないでしょう 便利べんりだったでしょう
